1 of 1 - Wearable Trading Card Case
Year 1 (2025-26)
by Samuel Kauranen
1 of 1 is a wearable trading card ecosystem that bridges physical cards and digital community, empowering collectors to showcase, protect, and connect.
About This Idea
Collection culture is exploding. From sports to Pokémon to entertainment, trading cards have become a multi-billion-dollar industry fueled by a passionate and rapidly growing community. But while the market has evolved, the collector experience hasn’t. Today’s collectors are geographically dispersed, digitally fragmented, and socially disconnected. Cards are stored in binders and boxes, protected, but hidden. There is no visible identity for collectors, no seamless way to connect locally, and no bridge between the physical card in your hand and the digital world where community thrives.
We believe cards shouldn’t just collect dust; they should be carried, displayed, and celebrated. Collecting is identity. It’s passion. It’s culture. And culture is meant to be shared.
That’s why we’re building 1 of 1, a wearable trading card ecosystem that transforms static collectibles into dynamic, everyday expressions of identity. Our system combines purpose-built wearable cases (standard, top-loader, and PSA graded), a secure tracking and auto-locking smart clip, and a closed-community mobile app. Together, they create a seamless physical-digital experience where collectors can showcase their prized cards, build profiles, discover nearby collectors, attend events, and eventually trade within a dedicated marketplace.
We are not just selling a case. We are building the connective layer for modern collecting, uniting protection, technology, and community into a single platform designed around passion, pride, and presence.
Where Did This Idea Spark at WMU?
The idea for 1 of 1 began in a Product Design course at WMU, where we were given open-ended project constraints. I intentionally set out to find an opportunity that felt personally relevant and creatively ambitious, something that hadn’t been fully explored yet. Around that time, I saw a trading card being worn in a custom case, which sparked a simple question: why doesn’t a true wearable solution exist for collectors? As I researched the space, I discovered a larger gap; cards were protected and stored, but not celebrated or integrated into everyday life. That insight shifted the project from a product concept into a broader ecosystem focused on identity, connection, and community within collecting culture.
Impact in Kalamazoo
If 1 of 1 works in Kalamazoo, local collectors win first.
WMU students who collect sports cards or Pokémon suddenly have a visible way to express what they’re into and instantly connect with others on campus. Instead of collecting alone, they can wear their cards, spark conversations, find nearby collectors through the app, and actually build community around it.
Local card shops win too. A more connected collector base means more in-person trades, more events, and more traffic in their stores. It makes collecting feel alive and social again instead of something that stays hidden in a binder.
If it works here, Kalamazoo becomes the proof that collecting can be visible, connected, and community-driven, and that’s something we can replicate everywhere.
How Investment Helps
Funding allows us to move from early prototypes to a visible presence in Kalamazoo.
With investment, we can produce refined production samples of our wearable cases and continue developing the smart clip hardware. More importantly, we can launch a strong online presence and begin activating the local collector community through partnerships with Kalamazoo hobby shops and WMU networks. Currently, without funding, we’re limited to isolated prototypes and smaller-scale conversations. With funding, we can intentionally create awareness, host our first local 1 of 1 meet-up, and start building real traction within the community.
Our first milestone is simple: establish 1 of 1 as a recognized presence in Kalamazoo’s collector scene, with visible product samples in the wild, local shop partnerships, and measurable community interest. If we can spark momentum here, we can scale it outward.
What I'll Do With the Money
1. Product Development & Engineering (45–55%)
Refining wearable case production samples, small-batch manufacturing, and working with an engineer to prototype and validate the smart clip hardware (locking + tracking). This moves us from concept models to functional, durable samples.
2. Hardware Prototyping & Testing (20–25%)
Component sourcing, PCB development, and iterative testing to ensure the core hardware works reliably.
3. Brand Presence & Local Activation (15–20%)
Launching a strong online presence, hosting our first Kalamazoo collector meet-up, and building partnerships with WMU networks and local hobby shops to create early visibility and traction. We will intentionally start small, focusing on building a strong, engaged local community before scaling (”do what doesn’t scale”).
4. Legal & Business Infrastructure (5–10%)
IP consultation for hardware protection and foundational business setup.
About the Founder
I’m Sam Kauranen, a Product Design student at Western Michigan University and co-founder of 1 of 1. I’m driven by curiosity and uncovering the core needs beneath surface-level problems. I work at the intersection of purpose and presence, building products that are both functional and meaningful. For me, great design is strategy and systems thinking applied to real human experience, and 1 of 1 is an extension of that mindset.
