Parisian Dream Desserts
Year 1 (2025-26)
by Kalea Barnes
We are a community-centered bakery that creates handcrafted, visually beautiful desserts from scratch. Blending classics with modern creativity, while offering customizable dietary-friendly options.
About This Idea
Parisian Dream Desserts is a handcrafted dessert brand focused on creating high-quality, homemade baked goods that are both visually appealing and inclusive for a wide range of dietary needs. I am building a community-centered bakery that blends classic flavors with modern creativity while offering customizable options such as vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free desserts so more people can enjoy specialty sweets without feeling excluded.
The problem I am solving is the lack of accessible, personalized dessert options that maintain both premium taste and thoughtful ingredient choices. Many bakeries either prioritize aesthetics over flavor or offer limited alternatives for customers with dietary restrictions, allergies, or health-conscious lifestyles. Parisian Dream Desserts fills this gap by providing beautiful, celebration-worthy treats that do not sacrifice quality, inclusivity, or affordability. Beyond the products themselves, the brand also aims to strengthen community connection by supporting local events, youth entrepreneurship inspiration, and small-business collaboration. My goal is to build a bakery experience where desserts are not just food, but meaningful moments of joy, representation, and shared celebration.
Where Did This Idea Spark at WMU?
Parisian Dream Desserts began when I was in 10th grade, baking from home with limited resources but a big vision. Attending Western Michigan University transformed that early passion into a focused entrepreneurial path. Through business and entrepreneurship classes, and projects, I developed skills in branding, marketing, and financial planning. WMU helped me shift from simply selling desserts to intentionally building a scalable, community-centered brand. Surrounded by driven students and supportive professors, I learned to think strategically, refine my ideas, and merge creativity with structure, turning a high-school dream into a mission-driven business.
Impact in Kalamazoo
If Parisian Dream Desserts succeeds in Kalamazoo, local families, students, and small businesses all benefit. Residents gain access to high-quality, customizable desserts that include vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free options, making celebrations more inclusive. Student organizations, nonprofits, and local events gain a reliable small business partner for affordable catering and community collaboration. The city also benefits from increased youth entrepreneurship representation and local economic circulation, as ingredients, services, and partnerships are sourced within the community. Beyond desserts, the impact is creating joyful experiences, supporting local connections, and inspiring other young entrepreneurs in Kalamazoo to pursue their ideas with confidence.
How Investment Helps
This investment would help Parisian Dream Desserts take root in Kalamazoo by making my dream of a mobile bakery trailer possible. A licensed trailer would allow me to legally operate at campus events, festivals, farmers markets, and community gatherings, opportunities that are currently limited without the proper setup and equipment. Funding would also support commercial-grade tools, branding, and bulk ingredient purchasing so I can increase production while keeping prices accessible. With a bakery trailer, I can meet customers where they are, build consistent local partnerships, and expand visibility much faster than operating from home alone. The first local milestone would be launching the trailer at WMU and Kalamazoo community events and securing recurring vendor and catering contracts!
What I'll Do With the Money
Bakery Trailer Build & Licensing – $7,000 will fund the construction, permits, and safety requirements for a mobile bakery to reach customers across Kalamazoo.
Commercial Equipment & Tools – $3,000 will go towards upgrades to ovens, mixers, and storage that support higher-volume production and consistent quality.
Ingredients & Packaging – $2,000 for purchasing specialty and bulk ingredients along with branded, eco-friendly packaging for events and catering.
Marketing & Launch Events – $2,000 towards promoting the trailer, run social campaigns, and attend local events to build community awareness and partnerships.
The remaining of funds will be dedicated to financial buffers for unexpected costs, maintenance, or opportunities to expand events and partnerships.
