Thirsty Lemon - A Premium Non-Alcoholic Social Lounge

Year 1 (2025-26)

by Chy'Ah Smith

Thirsty Lemon is an elevated, alcohol-free social lounge for college students and young adults seeking connection, creativity, and community without pressure to drink.

Thirsty Lemon - A Premium Non-Alcoholic Social Lounge

About This Idea

Founded by Chy’Ah Smith, Thirsty Lemon is a premium non-alcoholic social lounge concept designed to redefine how people gather, celebrate, and connect—without alcohol. While social spaces are often centered around drinking or coffee, there are very few options that offer an elevated, inclusive environment for people who want to be present, social, and intentional without alcohol.

College students and young adults increasingly prioritize wellness, aesthetics, and meaningful experiences, yet many feel excluded from traditional nightlife or bored by basic drink options. Thirsty Lemon solves this by offering thoughtfully crafted lemonades and mocktails in a lounge-style space that feels social, stylish, and welcoming.

The concept blends counter-service beverages, curated ambiance, music, and flexible seating to function as a true “third space”—a place that’s not home or work, but somewhere people can gather for conversation, creativity, studying, and community events. Thirsty Lemon is more than a drink—it’s an experience that normalizes alcohol-free socializing while still feeling premium, fun, and culturally relevant.

Where Did This Idea Spark at WMU?

This idea was born through my experience as a WMU student and campus leader. Between attending events, hosting student organization programs, and participating in entrepreneurship initiatives, I noticed a recurring gap: social experiences often revolved around alcohol or felt uninspired when they didn’t.

As the founder of Stay Thirsty Society and a participant in WMU’s Starting Gate accelerator, I began experimenting with pop-up lemonade experiences at campus and community events. The response was immediate—people were excited about having a non-alcoholic option that still felt intentional, elevated, and social. WMU’s entrepreneurial ecosystem helped me realize this wasn’t just a product idea, but a scalable concept rooted in student needs and community connection.

Impact in Kalamazoo

If Thirsty Lemon succeeds, Kalamazoo gains a new kind of social destination—one that supports wellness, inclusion, and local culture. Students, young professionals, creatives, and community members benefit from a space where they can gather without pressure to drink, while still enjoying a premium experience.

Locally, Thirsty Lemon would:
Create opportunities for student employment and creative collaboration
Activate underused spaces through pop-ups and events
Support Kalamazoo’s growing demand for inclusive, alcohol-free social options
Strengthen the city’s reputation as a place that supports innovative, community-centered businesses

This isn’t just about beverages—it’s about expanding what social life in Kalamazoo can look like.

How Investment Helps

This investment would allow Thirsty Lemon to move from a pop-up concept into a consistent, locally rooted operation. With funding, I can purchase professional equipment, refine branding, and host a series of pop-ups and pilot events in Kalamazoo to validate demand and build a loyal customer base.

The first major milestone would be launching a structured run of community pop-ups and private events in Kalamazoo that test the lounge experience, pricing, and menu. These pilots would lay the foundation for a future brick-and-mortar location by proving that an alcohol-free social lounge can thrive locally.

About the Founder

I’m Chy’Ah Smith, a WMU student, entrepreneur, and community builder passionate about creating intentional social spaces. I began selling lemonade in 2019 as a freshman at Renaissance High School and have since led student organizations, founded Stay Thirsty Society, and grown Thirsty Lemon through pop-ups and private events. I’m building this now because my generation is ready for premium, inclusive social spaces without alcohol at the center.
