Quever

Year 1 (2025-26)

by Sebastian Manuel De Leon Santos

A Tinder-like movie discovery app for friends to decide what to watch together. Users swipe through movie cards and generate ranked watchlists based on group consensus.

Quever

About This Idea

I am building Quever, a cooperative decision-making app that helps groups of friends, couples, and families agree on what to watch without the argument.

This app is solving the problem of "Analysis Paralysis" and social friction. In the age of unlimited streaming content, finding a movie takes longer than watching one. This "paradox of choice" often leads to frustration, doom-scrolling, or groups defaulting to content no one actually likes. Quever solves this by turning the decision process into a fun, gamified, and fair experience where an algorithm finds the perfect match based on everyone's hidden preferences.

Where Did This Idea Spark at WMU?

This idea came up when i was participating in one of the first meetings of the startup department of the Developer Club at Western Michigan University.

Impact in Kalamazoo

When Quever works, social bonds within Kalamazoo are strengthened through shared cultural experiences.

Families & Couples Win: The daily friction of "What do you want to watch?" a common source of household conflict—is eliminated, reclaiming time for actual connection and shared entertainment.

Social Circles Win: Friends spend less time debating logistics and more time enjoying the event, making movie nights (virtual or in-person) more frequent and accessible.

The "Quiet" Member Wins: In many social groups, dominant personalities choose the entertainment. Quever’s democratic voting system and "Veto" power ensure that introverted or less vocal group members have an equal say in the outcome.

How Investment Helps

Without funding, Quever relies on restrictive free-tier data and slower servers, which creates lag, the enemy of a real-time social app. With funding, we can unlock:
Premium API Access: We can purchase commercial access to Watchmode and TMDB, ensuring our streaming data (e.g., "Is this on Netflix or Hulu?") is 100% accurate for our region, which is critical for user trust.
Robust Real-Time Infrastructure: We can upgrade to professional Databases tiers to ensure that when a user swipes "Like," their friends see it instantly, preventing the app from crashing during peak "Friday Night" usage.

First Local Milestone: Launch the "Quever Beta" pilot program with 100 active local groups in Kalamazoo within 6 months, gathering feedback to refine the "local mood" algorithms.

What I'll Do With the Money

Technical Infrastructure & Data Licensing: 30%. To secure the standard of streaming data accuracy and guarantee zero latency when thousands of users participate in sessions at the same time.

Product Polish & UX Engineering — 30%. To elevate the app from "functional" to "engaging" making sure card-swiping physics and app animations are as fluid and satisfying as other market leaders.

Marketing & Viral Loop "Seeding" — 25%. To solve the "empty room" problem by acquiring the critical mass of initial users needed to ignite the viral loop of friends inviting friends.

Legal, IP Protection & Corporate Structure — 15%. To protect the brand's intellectual property and ensure the company is legally structured to accept future venture capital or angel investment safely.

About the Founder

I am Sebastian De Leon, a transfer student coming from the Dominican Republic, I am currently in my junior year as a Computer Engineering Student at WMU. At my previous university I was majoring in Computer Science with the goal of creating digital solutions for everyone. I like developing ideas into products and finding who benefits them.
