Nature’s Edge: Engineering Backyard Transformations
Year 1 (2025-26)
by Stacey Austin II
Nature’s Edge is a Kalamazoo based outdoor construction startup building patios, pavers, and backyard spaces today with plans to expand into engineered retaining systems tomorrow.
About This Idea
Nature’s Edge is a new outdoor construction company focused on building high-quality patios, paver systems, and backyard living spaces in Kalamazoo.
Homeowners in Southwest Michigan are investing more in their properties, but many struggle to find contractors who combine craftsmanship, professionalism, and long-term structural thinking. Smaller crews often lack technical planning, while larger contractors can be expensive and difficult to access.
Nature’s Edge aims to bridge that gap.
The first phase focuses on residential outdoor builds—concrete patios, pavers, walkways, and small retaining walls. The long-term vision is to integrate civil engineering expertise into the business, allowing the company to expand into engineered retaining systems, drainage solutions, soil compaction planning, and eventually small commercial outdoor projects.
This business is being built intentionally from the ground up: start with craftsmanship, build a reputation for quality, then layer in engineering capability as professional licensure and experience grow.
Nature’s Edge is not just about landscaping. It is about building durable, technically sound outdoor environments that add long-term value to properties in Kalamazoo.
Where Did This Idea Spark at WMU?
As a civil engineering student at Western Michigan University, I’ve learned how soil behavior, drainage, load distribution, and compaction affect long-term structural performance.
That perspective changed how I see outdoor construction. Many residential retaining walls and hardscapes fail not because of poor effort—but because of poor planning and lack of engineering awareness.
WMU’s engineering coursework sparked the idea to build a company that starts with strong craftsmanship and grows into a technically grounded outdoor construction firm capable of handling more complex structural projects over time.
Impact in Kalamazoo
If successful, Nature’s Edge will:
• Create local skilled trade jobs
• Provide professionally built outdoor spaces for homeowners
• Increase property values across neighborhoods
• Keep engineering talent rooted in Kalamazoo
Rather than leaving the area after graduation, this business keeps technical skill and entrepreneurship local.
Long term, Kalamazoo benefits from having an outdoor construction company that combines practical field work with engineering knowledge.
How Investment Helps
This funding accelerates launch.
Without funding, growth would be limited to small jobs and slow reinvestment.
With funding, Nature’s Edge can:
• Acquire the equipment required for hardscape and concrete projects
• Secure materials for multiple projects at once
• Establish professional branding and digital presence
• Launch with the capacity to handle larger builds immediately
The first milestone would be completing multiple full backyard transformation projects in Kalamazoo within the first construction season.
What I'll Do With the Money
Work Truck & Trailer – $15,000
Reliable transportation to move equipment, pavers, concrete, and materials between job sites. This ensures operational efficiency and professional job execution from day one.
Equipment & Tools – $40,000
Professional-grade compactors, skid steer attachment access, grading tools, concrete finishing equipment, laser levels, saws, safety equipment, and hardscape installation tools.
This allows us to perform patios, retaining walls, and concrete installs in-house instead of subcontracting, dramatically improving margins.
Marketing & Customer Acquisition – $10,000
Professional branding, website development, targeted digital advertising in the Kalamazoo area, yard signage, truck wraps, and professional photography to quickly build visibility and secure consistent project flow.
Operating Capital & Materials – $10,000
Initial material purchases and cash-flow buffer to take on multiple projects simultaneously without financial strain, allowing responsible early-
About the Founder
I’ve been pouring concrete and building landscapes since I was 14. Now, as a civil engineering student at Western Michigan University, I’m combining trade experience with engineering education to build something bigger. I don’t just want to work in construction I want to lead it. With the right investment, I can turn years of hands-on work into a scalable company rooted in Kalamazoo.
